THE Socialist councilor Carlos Rodríguez announced today that his party has filed a motion for discussion and approval at the Full Council next Friday on 29 requiring that the City of Cehegín provide a joint and immediate response to the suffering of the Haitian people, through approval of a lot of help.
Rodriguez, who hopes that the motion be approved unanimously by all political groups, said it is vital that public authorities will promote the participation of society so that it proves, once again, their solidarity and tip with non-governmental organizations operating in Haiti and have opened accounts to raise funds. "
In that sense, the socialist mayor said that "it is our duty to mobilize all possible efficiency and solidarity for a country that needs lots of help, not only to emergencies but to building medium and long term."
The earthquake measuring 7.3 degrees on Richter scale occurred in Haiti on Jan. 12, has seriously affected Haiti, the poorest in Latin America.
The casualty figures are staggering.
A week after the earthquake and 70,000 corpses have been buried in mass graves, although it is estimated that the total number of deaths from the disaster could reach 200,000.
Rodriguez recalled that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Spanish confirmed the dispatch urgent humanitarian aid from Panama, where Spanish Cooperation has a logistics base.
So far there are thirteen humanitarian flights with tons of food and humanitarian aid that the Spanish government has chartered from the start of the operation.
However, Rodriguez explained that with this devastating situation, "it is essential to a united and coordinated all public authorities to help the Haitian people."
