The new excavations in Begastri credit the Visigoth town flourishing in the sixth century AD (26/07/2013)

The campaign this summer excavations at the archaeological site develops Begastri has accredited the flourishing and urban development Visigoth city in the sixth century AD, "probably related to arrivals from Toledo forces in time of Visigoth King Recaredo" .

This is explained by the coordinator of the excavations and professor at the University of Murcia, José Antonio Molina, who has guido the local mayor, José Soria, and the Councillor for Culture, Nicolas del Toro, in his visit to the site, accompanied by the director of the Archaeological Museum of Cehegín and campaign coordinator, Francisco Aroca.

"Visigoth Begastri is a walled city with Cyclopean walls of the sixth century, possibly of Visigothic advance against Byzantine positions in Cartagena" said Molina, who added that this year they are working an area neighborhood within the walls with a series room structures framed by streets that intersect "that lead us to an important part of planning the sixth century, an era that is emerging as important in Begastri".

In the excavation of this year about 20 people are participating.

There is a group of Spanish students and there are also foreigners, have been Italian and German and is now working a group of seven Polish archaeologists, the result of an agreement with the University of Warsaw.

"More and more students and archaeologists interested in coming to work in Begastri, which means that is a interesting site in which you learn," said Molina.

For his part, Councillor of Culture has claimed that these excavations pose a mutual collaboration between the City of Cehegín and the University of Murcia "through which it is exposing Begastri this site."
