The Northwest Defense Council denounces the serious deterioration of the Bajo Quípar aquifer (05/07/2020)

| (between Bullas and Cehegín) | They denounce that: "THE DESTRUCTION OF THE MAR MENOR, IS MAKING NORTHWEST MURCIANO THE NEW FIELD OF CARTAGENA", for the systematic inaction against a problem already known by the state, regional and municipal administration. Last Thursday, July 2, in Cehegín, a new meeting of the Northwest Defense Council took place.

It was carried out with limited capacity for 13 participants to respect the measures against COVID 19, for which reason it was followed telematically by as many people from the region. At that meeting, the serious problem suffered by the aquifer called "Bajo Quípar", which runs between the municipalities of Bullas and Cehegín, as well as the allegations to be submitted to the revision of the Basin Plan, of the decisive 2021 cycle- 2027. Last month's analyzes, commissioned by the Council itself, detect nitrate concentration levels of 226mg / l, in a source in Bajo Quipar, when the legal limit is 50mg / l, which supposes a very high contamination index.

superior even to those that have been detected in the deteriorated aquifer of Cartagena, Mar Menor. These results are similar to the measurements that the Segura Hydrographic Confederation itself periodically performs since, at least 2009, although they have reached more scandalous levels, such as the data from December 2015, in which 492 mg / l were recorded, the highest contamination data detected in the entire Segura Basin, without this having led to any specific measure, as established by the Water Framework Directive (DMA), and the Water Law itself, thus confirming the negligence of the CHS in everything that affects the waters of the Region and the Basin in general. From the Council it was denounced that, the most serious thing is that most of the aquifers in the Basin will not reach 2027 healthy, that is, not overexploited and uncontaminated, as required by the DMA.

Among them is the Bajo Quipar aquifer. The contamination of the aquifer waters that are finally used for irrigation poses a health hazard.

It is also a serious threat to the biodiversity of the area, causing a process similar to that which sadly has been undergoing, and with no apparent solution, in the entire environment of the Mar Menor lagoon. For all these reasons, both the President of the Platform, Pedro Costa Morata, and the rest of the Council's members demand that the CHS put an end to its extensive inaction and permissiveness, and carry out effective measures, to which it is obliged , that allow to tackle this serious problem, noting that: "THE DESTRUCTION OF THE MAR MENOR, IS MAKING NORTHWEST MURCIANO THE NEW FIELD OF CARTAGENA". The Council also calls on all the mayors of the region, and in particular the mayors of Bullas and Cehegín, for greater involvement and social and political pressure to end this problem for so many years of neglect.

In fact, one of the most important agreements reached was to hold meetings with the first councilors of the 5 municipalities of the region, to demand their involvement in the face of the problems the Council is working on, such as: contamination, overexploitation.

of aquifers, the breakings and illegal earthworks, the clandestine extensions of new intensive irrigation, in response to which they request measures such as the establishment of limitations on intensive cultivation.

To this end, they are waiting for the creation of the Regional Table for Water, Agriculture and the Environment, which they already proposed earlier this year.
