López Miras announces the hiring of 50 more English teachers in schools that teach advanced level (04/09/2018)

The Region of Murcia is the first community in Spain with all its bilingual colleges and institutes, with an increase of more than 30 percent of the budget for conversation assistants

Almost 6,000 6th grade students of the bilingual modality will enjoy free language immersion camps

The president of the Community, Fernando Lopez Miras, announced today extraordinary measures to enhance language learning in schools, such as the additional hiring of 50 teachers who will reinforce bilingualism classes in schools that teach advanced level of English in Primary Education , and those who do it simultaneously in Infant and Primary.

The regional chief executive highlighted the "clear commitment" to bilingualism, a modality that this course has already been implemented in all the centers of the Region one year ahead of schedule.

López Miras remarked that the Region of Murcia is the first community in Spain with all its bilingual colleges and institutes, during his visit today to the CEIP Ciudad de Begastri and the Virgen de las Maravillas de Cehegín, the first municipality in Spain where this has begun. school year, in which more than 265,000 students in the Region will be progressively incorporated into the classrooms.

In the Region, bilingual education is implemented in all its centers, a total of 614 centers.

Each one can choose the level of linguistic immersion to be taught, which can be basic, intermediate or advanced, depending on the workload dedicated to bilingual teaching.

Thus, in Pre-school Education, 89 percent of the centers (480 centers) teach the initial modality and more than 10 percent (55 centers) the advanced.

In Primary Education, 53 percent of the centers (263) are in the basic modality, 33 percent in the intermediate (164) and 14 percent (70) in the advanced.

In the case of Secondary Education, 16 percent of the centers (37) are in the basic modality, 34 percent (79) in the intermediate and 50 percent (116) in the advanced.

The objective is that once bilingualism is implemented in all the centers, progress is progressively made at the level, for which new measures and actions will be applied to improve and guarantee success in language teaching.

With this same purpose, as indicated by the president, this year increases by more than 30 percent the budget for conversation assistants, with 2,250,000 euros, which will involve 446 conversation assistants compared to 383 last year .

In total, the Community will invest 6,275,000 euros in additional hiring of teachers for centers with advanced level of English, conversation assistants, teacher training and performances for students related to the foreign language system.

Among them, the president highlighted the free language immersion camps for 6th grade students in the bilingual modality, which will be held in the Region throughout the course.

This measure will benefit a total of 5,937 students and it will allocate 950,000 euros.

More teachers, more scholarships and better infrastructures

The course begins with more teachers, in particular 25,600, which is an increase of 494 over the previous year to which we must add the 50 teachers who will be hired to strengthen the bilingual classes, as announced by the president.

In addition, the number of students per classroom has been reduced to improve the quality of education.

Likewise, there will be a total of 108 open classrooms, seven more than the previous year, which will serve more than 700 students with special educational needs.

A total of 61,000 students will receive grants, of which 42,400 will benefit for the first time from the free textbook program, which this year reaches 3 rd and 4 th grade of Primary School, Basic Education, special education centers and open classrooms.

Another 18,600 students will receive scholarships for school supplies.

The regional government earmarks a total of 12.8 million scholarships, free books and grants, compared to 10.2 last year.

To all this must be added the improvement of infrastructures carried out this summer in 60 centers, and that has meant an investment of 2 million euros.
