Agriculture grants aid of 127,000 euros to 'Wine School' Cehegín (28/02/2014)

The funding comes from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, which provides 75 percent of the amount, and the Ministry and the Ministry co-finance the remaining 25 percent

The Directorate General of Irrigation and Rural Development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water has awarded the City of Cehegín a grant of 127,000 euros from the EU LEADER aid for the implementation of the 'Wine School' cultural center and training around the oenological and gastronomic world.

The aid included in the Rural Development Programme for the Region of Murcia, has been earmarked for the rehabilitation of the old cellars of the Palace of Terce, the seventeenth century, and the creation of a training area and an exhibition area where wine lovers can gather and local cuisine.

The work has also included the adaptation of spaces to provide access to disabled people.

This project, managed by the Integral Local Action Group and included in the line of support for the conservation and upgrading of the rural heritage also includes environmental awareness activities and promotion of new technologies and measures to encourage the involvement of youth in activities of cultural identity.

The Director General of Irrigation and Rural Development, Julio Bernal, noted that "the implementation of this project significantly expands tourism in the area and also involves a significant recovery of the architectural and cultural heritage of this town."

The 'Wine School', located in the historic center of Cehegín, was recently opened and received more than 900 visits during the two inaugural open house.

Since then, more than 3,000 people have participated in the talks, pairings, tastings and courses offered by the center.

The School has four employees and can be visited on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 to 14 hours prior telephone appointment with the Office of Tourism Cehegín.

The project aims to further incorporate a camera to provide interested parties a virtual tour inside the premises at any time of day.

European funding for this project is the Rural Development Programme by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD).

This fund covers 75 percent of the total amount of each of the projects approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water for the development of rural areas.

The remaining 25 percent is funded equally by the Ministry and the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Environment.
