The Governing Council of the Region of Murcia authorizes a grant of 195,000 euros to Canaraflor (05/11/2020)

| For the creation of the first innovation center in the field of cut flowers | The mayor of Cehegín, Alicia del Amor, has announced that the Governing Council has authorized the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment to grant a grant of 195,000 euros to the Canaraflor cooperative, for the adaptation of a greenhouse and the installation of a cut flower innovation center in terms of genetic improvement, integrated pest management and sustainable use of fertilizers and phytosanitary products. The initiative will involve an investment of more than 200,000 euros and will include aspects such as the electrification of the greenhouse, the automatic control of temperature and aeration, the installation of the irrigation network, conservation chambers, the application of phytosanitary products, as well as the improvement of accesses to facilitate visits by farmers. The Mayor of Cehegín thanked the Autonomous Community for this support to this strategic sector “after different meetings that I have held together with the Councilor for Agriculture, Pedro Lorencio, in which we convey to them the importance of this initiative, since it will be the first innovation center for cut flowers in the Region, which will be operational in the first half of 2021 and will provide advice to all flower growers in the Region, justified in the general, public and social interest of this agricultural activity ".It is an initiative that pursues research and technology transfer between companies in the cut flower sector, motivated by the difficulties caused in their cultivation system related to climate change, the increasing reduction in the use of authorized products for the control of pests and diseases, as well as the implementation of new more sustainable fertilization systems that reduce the problems caused by nitrate contamination. The cut flower sector in the Region of Murcia cultivates approximately 270 hectares (70 in greenhouse) of which 94 are in the Northwest Region, with small facilities, mostly low-tech and with a marked family character .

It encompasses about 200 producers of which 50% are from the Northwest Region, highlighting the cultivation of carnation with 75 hectares. With a total regional production of 287 million units with a value greater than 142 million euros, it represents 7% of the agricultural production of the Region of Murcia.Canaraflor, we recall, that it was established in 1989 with the aim of improving the production and associative marketing in the cultivation of cut flowers, which is currently marketed close to 30 million units, being formed by more than 70 partners .
